Deus non alligatur. God is not bound. Nibbanam paramam sukham. Unbinding is the Highest Happiness. The Heart is Divinity. God is the primal radiance of Divinity. Nature is the primal manifestation of Divinity. The Buddha is the primal realization of Divinity. La ilaha il Allah. Allah is Complete Wholeness.

The Lord's Supper: Bhagavad Bhukta

Yajnarthat-karmano-nyatra lokoyam karmabandhanah;
Tadartham karma kaunteya muktasangah samachara.

"The world is bound by actions other than those performed for the sake of sacrifice; therefore, Arjuna, son of Kunti, perform action for that sake -- for sacrifice alone -- free from attachment."

-- Bhagavad Gita 3:9

The Divine Liturgy, the Eucharistic Sacrifice, is the Christian Form of the Ancient Yajna, the Timeless Tantra, the Primal Puja.

Come and See

No religion is perfect. All religions make mistakes. (True, in the great-scheme-of-things, all is perfect and there are no mistakes; but I'm talking about a more pedestrian sort of imperfection and mistakenness.) For many people, there is no one religion that they totally agree with 100% in all matters of doctrine and practice.

Some members of a religion would say that, if you don't agree 100% in all matters of doctrine and practice, then you shouldn't be a member of the religion in question. Balderdash! Poppycock! They're flimflamming, bamboozling, hoodwinking with such statements. From an Abrahamic perspective, God may not have created this world imperfect, but He certainly has allowed it to continue in such a state of being, and to search for perfection in religion (which is certainly composed of imperfect beings and ideas) is about as smart as to search for perfection in a human being.

The purpose of religion is spiritual transmission, not perfection in either doctrine or practice. Start from the baseline that all religions are imperfect and mistaken, to one degree or another. For some, such a realization might lead them to dispense with religion altogether. For others, it might lead them to remain in the religion to which they currently belong. For some others, it opens up a different sort of possibility: the question becomes, which religion exhibits spiritually potency, doctrinal differences and institutional failings notwithstanding?

There are two ways to approach the spiritual life. One way is the way of submission: one simply accepts whatever a particular religious tradition teaches as being true and good. The way of submission is a venerable path, but it's not the only choice. Unfortunately, the way of submission has dominated much of Christian history.

The second way is the way of "come and see", scientific-tantra, noetic experimentation, or spiritual empiricism: one tests the doctrines and practices within one's own body-mind, adopting what proves true and good, and putting to the side what does not. The way of scientific-tantra has not dominated Christian history and practice, but it does exist.

The Four Turnings

The history of religions is the history of the four turnings of the Wheel of Truth. Each religion has elements of all four turnings, but each religion usually emphasizes one turning or another.

First Turning of the Wheel, the Revelation of Jivanta: The Encounter with Truth

Second Turning of the Wheel, the Revelation of the Buddha: The Incarnation of Truth

Third Turning of the Wheel, the Revelation of the Beloved: The Liberation into Truth

Fourth Turning of the Wheel, the Revelation of the Heart: The Tantric-Eucharistic Union of Incarnation-Liberation

[Inspired by the Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma.]

Fides et Ratio: Some Meditations

The Eucharist is the practice (symbolic and actual) of the Tantric Union of Awareness (Wine) and Matter/Energy (Bread), of Spirit and Matter, of Compassion and Wisdom, of Nirvana and Samsara, of the Everything and the Nothing.

God alone IS. God is the Everything and the Nothing. To say that God created the world ex nihilo, or "out of nothing", is to say that Everything-God created the world out of Nothing-God. The Nothing, being also God, means that the world is also God.

There is only one life: the birth into the world-separate-from-God (or "original sin") and the final liberation-salvation into God-not-different-from-the-world. But this one life has many "going-to-sleeps" (temporary deaths) and "waking-ups" (temporary births). Reincarnation is true, but it's not the final truth. Heaven-and-Hell is true, but it's not the final truth.

A Hindu experiences Infinite Love and calls it "Krishna". A Christian experiences Infinite Love and calls it "Christ". Krishna is Christ, if both are understood correctly. No, let me rephrase that: Krishna is Christ, even if both are understood incorrectly.

The doctrine of papal infallibility states that, under very restricted circumstances and conditions, the Pope, when speaking most authoritatively, cannot define doctrine errantly. Whether this is true or not, is not important. If it is true, there is no way to empirically prove it thusly. In terms of shoring up faith among certain portions of the Christian population, the doctrine may be useful and unobjectionable. The doctrine need only be duly noted, by those who find it superfluous. Indeed, some things are better left alone, until the mystic-eye opens.

Through the mystic-eye, the doctrine of papal infallibility manifests a deeper significance, a significance understood in terms of non-dualism, Advaita Christanta, and intimations of Guru-Bhakti Yoga.

The energetic practice of compassion and wisdom is the foundation. One can then be Methodist, Reform, Ismaili, Vaishnava, or Gelukpa. Communal membership need not matter. Of course, in that case, one must be prepared to enjoy the heretic's reward. Whether such reward is worth it or not, depends upon a host of conditions. But some of us are born a hairesis of one, and could not care less: we don't reject; we transform. Leave politics to the politicians. Leave patriotism to the patriots.

Christ speaks through all scriptures, saints, sages, and siddhas. Translation is the lost art.

In The Beginning

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, First Adhyaya, Fourth Brahmana, 1-5:

1. In the beginning this was Self alone, in the shape of a person (purusha). He looking round saw nothing but his Self. He first said, 'This is I;' therefore he became I by name. Therefore even now, if a man is asked, he first says, 'This is I,' and then pronounces the other name which he may have. And because before (pûrva) all this, he (the Self) burnt down (ush) all evils, therefore he was a person (pur-usha). Verily he who knows this, burns down every one who tries to be before him.

2. He feared, and therefore any one who is lonely fears. He thought, 'As there is nothing but myself, why should I fear?' Thence his fear passed away. For what should he have feared? Verily fear arises from a second only.

3. But he felt no delight. Therefore a man who is lonely feels no delight. He wished for a second. He was so large as man and wife together. He then made this his Self to fall in two (pat), and thence arose husband (pati) and wife (patnî). Therefore Yâgñavalkya said: 'We two are thus (each of us) like half a shell.' Therefore the void which was there, is filled by the wife. He embraced her, and men were born.

4. She thought, 'How can he embrace me, after having produced me from himself? I shall hide myself.'

She then became a cow, the other became a bull and embraced her, and hence cows were born. The one became a mare, the other a stallion; the one a male ass, the other a female ass. He embraced her, and hence one-hoofed animals were born. The one became a she-goat, the other a he-goat; the one became a ewe, the other a ram. He embraced her, and hence goats and sheep were born. And thus he created everything that exists in pairs, down to the ants.

5. He knew, 'I indeed am this creation, for I created all this.' Hence he became the creation, and he who knows this lives in this his creation.

Adam and Eve

When Yahweh Elohim (or YE) created Adam, YE expected Adam to live directly from the Heart.

The physical heart YE placed in the left side of Adam's chest.

The spiritual heart YE placed in the center of Adam's chest.

The Heart Itself was hidden in the right side of the chest.

Adam, though, could not locate the Heart.

YE gave various animals to Adam, to help him locate the Heart.

But the animals, though living from the Heart, did not possess the awareness of living from the Heart.

So YE split Adam down the middle, separating Adam into a "right" side and a "left" side.

The left-side Adam became the masculine Adam who, though possessing all three hearts, became adept in using the physical heart and all things physical and intellectual.

The right-side Adam became the feminine Eve, who, though possessing all three hearts, became adept at living directly from the Heart.

Eve, in being a "help-meet", was actually a "Heart-meet".

The Heart can only be known in silence, stillness, quiet, and darkness.

The "eve"-ning is when the Heart becomes most active, during sleep and during brahmamurta, the dark hours of 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.

(The Buddha awakened to the Heart, to "Eve", during brahmamurta, as the Morning Star, the "Christ", rose over the eastern horizon.)

Eve is the personification, embodiment, manifestation, of the Heart in human form.

Adam did not recognize Eve as the Heart, and sought for the Heart in inwardness.

Adam rejected the temptations of dualism, symbolized by the dual-pronged tongue of the wise and deceptive serpent.

Adam sought the Heart in asceticism, renunciation, and abandonment of the world.

Adam lived as the Yogi Shiva.

Eve, Adam's Parvati, had other plans.

Adam had not known falsehood.

If Adam were to live in the Heart, then Adam required tempering via the serpent's wisdom and deception.

Eve introduced Adam to falsehood, so that Adam could directly experience the false as false.

The First Adam took the false to be true, ushering death into the world.

The Second Adam took the false to be false, and beat the Drum of the Deathless.

The Second Adam realized the Heart, and lived from, in, and as the Heart.

In the Second Adam, the masculine Adam and the feminine Eve are re-united in scientific-tantric union.

In the Second Adam, the Beloved is re-united with the Heart.

Lord of the Meeting Rivers

Daughter of the Mountains

The demons lead by Taraka, rose from the netherworld and drove the devas, gods, out of the heavens. The gods sought a warrior who would help them regain the celestial realm.

“Only Shiva can father such a warrior,” informed Brahma.

But Shiva, immersed in meditation, was oblivious to the problems of the gods. As he performed tapas, meditations that produce great heat and energy, his mind was filled with great knowledge and his body became resplendent with energy. But all this knowledge and energy, bottled within his being, was of not use to anyone.

The gods invoked the mother-goddess, who appeared before them as Kundalini, a coiled serpent. “I will coil myself around Shiva, wean out his knowledge and energy for the good of the world and make him father a child,” said Shakti. Shakti took birth as Parvati, daughter of the Himavan, lord of the mountains, determined to draw Shiva out of his cave and make him her consort.

Everyday Parvati would visit Shiva’s cave, sweep the floor, decorate it with flowers and offer him fruits hoping to win his love.

But Shiva never opened his eyes to look upon her charming face. Exasperated, the goddess invoked Priti and Rati, goddess of love and longing, to rouse Shiva out of his mediation.

These goddesses entered Shiva desolate cave and transformed it into a pleasure garden filled with the fragrance of flowers and the buzzing of bees.

Guided by Priti and Rati, Kama, the lord of desire, raised his sugarcane bow and shot arrows dripping with desire into the heart of Shiva.

Shiva was not amused. He opened his third eye and released the flames of fury that engulfed Kama and reduced his beautiful body to ashes.

The death of Kama alarmed the gods. “Without the lord of desire man will not embrace woman and life will cease to be.”

“I shall find another way to conquer Shiva’s heart. When Shiva becomes my consort, Kama will be reborn,” said the daughter of the mountain, Parvati.

Parvati went into the forest and performed rigorous tapas, wearing nothing to protect her tender body form the harsh weather, eating nothing, not even a leaf, earning the admiration of forest ascetics who named her Aparna.

Aparna matched Shiva in her capacity to cut herself from the world and completely master her physical needs. The power of her tapas shook Shiva out of his mediation. He stepped out of his cave and accepted Parvati as his wife.

Shiva married Parvati in the presence of the gods following the sacred rites and took her to the highest peak of the cosmos, Mount Kailasa, the pivot of the universe. As the world revolved all around them the two became one and Kama was reborn.

Parvati melted Shiva’s stern heart with her affection. Together they played dice on Mount Kailas or sported on the banks of Lake Manasarovar, discovering the joys of married life.

The goddess awakened Shiva’s concern for the world by questioning him on various issues. As he spoke, he revealed the secrets of the Tantras and the Vedas that he had gathered in eons of mediation.

Inspired by her beauty, Shiva became the fountainhead of the arts, of dance and drama. He sang and danced to the delight of the gods who were pleased to see his enchantment with the goddess.

Parvati gave Shiva’s aura to the gods. “From this will rise the warlord you seek,” said the goddess.

The gods gave Shiva’s aura to Svaha, consort of Agni, the fire god. Unable to bear the heat of the auro and the god Agni for long, Svaha gave the aura to Ganga the river goddess who cooled it in her icy waters until Shiva’s aura turned into a seed.

Aranyani, the goddess of the forest, embedded the divine seed in the fertile forest floor where it was transformed into a robust child with six heads and twelve arms.

Six forest nymphs called the Krittikas found this magnificent child in a lotus. Over come by maternal affection they began nursing him. The six headed son of Shiva, born of many mothers, came to be known as Kartikeya.

Parvati taught Kartikeya the art of war and turned him into a the celestial warlord called Skanda.

Skanda took command of the celestial armies, defeated Taraka in battle and restored the heavens to the gods.

With Parvati by his side, Shiva became a family man. But he did not abandon his ways as a hermit: he continued to meditate and immerse himself in narcotic dreams. His carefree attitude, his refusal to shoulder household responsibilities sometimes angered Parvati. But then she would come to terms with his unconventional ways and make peace. The consequent marital bliss between Shakti and Shiva ensured harmony between Matter and Spirit and brought stability and peace to the cosmos.

Parvati thus became Ambika, goddess of the household, of marriage, motherhood and family.

FM

Each saint, prophet, or avatar has his or her intimate beloved. In the Indic traditions, one name commonly describes both individuals. Instead of saying "Krishna and Radha", one would say "RadhaKrishna", with the feminine person preceding the masculine person.

In the Christian tradition, then, one proposes Mary-Jesus, or MiryamYeshu.

Mary

Mary, Mother of Yeshu Christos, has the Hebrew form Miryam. In Sonic Theology, Miryam vibrates at different frequencies: mi means "to fasten to the earth"; r (as related to the Sanskrit "r.") links to "heaven"; and yam forms "to be firm". Miryam promises to establish Heaven on Earth.

The Susie Q Gita

Billy Bob: Dontcha' know, Susie Q, that all of this is only God? We think that this car here is a car, and this tree over yonder is a tree. But we think these things in the wrong way. Only God is real.

Susie Q: OK, Billy Bob. So what else is new?

Billy Bob: Dontcha' see, Susie Q? We're thinking, and therefore, speaking and acting, in the wrong way. This whole process of wrong living, of wrong thinking, is called 'maya'. Whatever is wrong, must be immediately replaced with what is right!

Susie Q: Billy Bob, so what are you fixin' to do?

Billy Bob: Well, I'm gonna get me some right thinking under my cap. I'm gonna keep in my mind, the idea that maya is not really real, but is something we humans create. I'm gonna keep in my mind, the idea that maya is not really real, only God is really real. Maya is illusion and the source of further illusion. I'm gonna refuse to suffer the slings and arrows of maya, and take up arms against maya's unreality. I won't sleep until my work against the un-real, against illusion, against maya, is completed!

Susie Q: Good Lord, Billy Bob, you done gone off the deep end!

Billy Bob: Silence, woman! The only way to realize reality, is to defeat that which is not real. We're all wallowing in maya like a pig in mud on a hot summer's day!

Susie Q: Billy Bob, your son was harvesting the corn last week, right?

Billy Bob: Uhh...yeah?

Susie Q: And the week before that, he could barely walk home from the bar. Which of these two sons of yours, do you think, represents your son at his best?

Billy Bob: Well, when he was harvesting, he was working and making something of himself, and also helping out with the chores. When he was drunk, he nearly got himself clobbered by a tree. So, I reckon, he was at his best when he was working.

Susie Q: And how did he go from being drunk, to working on the farm, all diligent and all?

Billy Bob: Let me figure here. I took him in, fed him, got his papers in order, signed him up for AA, and took care of his debts. He owes me about $20,000 by now.

Susie Q: So you cared for him, and loved him, and he was able to go from drunk to gung-ho harvester.

Billy Bob: So what's your point, Susie Q?

Susie Q: My point is quite elementary, Billy Bob. You can't fight against maya, illusion, unreality, as if it were some dragon you fixin' to slay. You have to look at maya with soft eyes, willing to go into the trenches with unreality, ready to become bosom buddies with illusion. Love the car, which apparently is different from God; revel in the tree, which apparently is different from God. Only by fully accepting maya, and renouncing the desire to destroy or even change, maya, can you allow maya to fulfill its purpose. Aim your arrows of love towards maya, rather than scheming for maya's dissolution. Love maya! And then see if maya can resist your love.
